Find Your Inner Teacher in the Year of the Hermit

Joy Vernon Astrology * Tarot * Reiki Teaching Manifesto: What I Offer As Your Teacher

2025 is the year of the Hermit. That is to say, the digits 2 + 0 + 2 + 5 add together to equal 9, the number of the Hermit card in the Major Arcana. The Hermit is known as a loner, following his own light and wandering far from the widely walked path. Sometimes associated with the sign of Virgo or with the planet Saturn, his focus is on details, diligence, step-by-step approaches, and establishing strong foundations. As we start this year, you’re probably feeling that you’re ready to walk your own path. But if you’d like a guide, here are the top nine things I offer as your teacher. I call it my “Joy Vernon Astrology * Tarot * Reiki Teaching Manifesto.”

There appeared before him an old man of venerable appearance.” by Edmund Dulac, 1911. Wikimedia Commons. Public Domain.

As a student, the Hermit is self-guided. He carefully experiments, tests, and refines what he knows.

As a teacher, the Hermit points you in the right direction–then disappears off on his own quest. But he intuitively returns when you need him most, a Merlin or Gandalf to your developing hero. He’s the old man at the game table in the park as you cross the board to your crowning moment. But his secret is that although he gently prods or corrects, he doesn’t command. Instead, he sparks your own inner light.

I invite you to find your inner teacher in the year of the Hermit. And to let you follow the favor of your fate. And to pop in when you need a nudge.

How will you find me when you need me? Glad you asked! Please consider subscribing to my blog (form below this paragraph), Substack, Youtube, or Meetup. Or my newsletter for a monthly summary. I’m always there when you need me!

Joy Vernon Teaching Manifesto

1. I believe learning is about practice, not knowledge.

I promise that all my classes will be hands-on and experiential.

2. I believe classes are about connection and conversation, not silent, isolated reception.

I promise that all my classes will give you the chance to learn from each other and to share your insights, experiences, and wisdom.

3. I believe that deep understanding comes from ongoing, steady work. Learning something quickly and moving on to the next thing is a waste of time and effort.

I promise that my classes, from a one-off workshop to a multi-year program, will provide opportunities to continue the work on your own or in a group.

4. I believe that the teacher’s role is not to hand down expertise from above. Instead, a teacher should be a facilitator, a guide, a resource, a cheerleader.

I promise to continually remind class participants that personal exploration is more important than accumulating facts and philosophies.

5. I believe great teachers should have that magic ability to offer each person precisely what they need in the moment.

I promise to always tune into what participants need through observation, listening, and intuition. My goal is to help each participant connect the dots of their own learning journey.

6. I believe that each person has access to an unlimited wealth of insight through their intuition. A teacher’s goal is to teach each person to fish in their own profundity.

I promise to offer instruction and practice of meditation, intuitive development, and spiritual connection as each person’s primary tools for learning.

7. I believe each person has an inner teacher who is waiting patiently to guide you through your unique learning journey. Your job as a student is to connect with your inner teacher.

I promise to set each student up as the author of their own expertise.

8. I believe that the teacher should create an environment of success that gently shifts the student toward confident proficiency. The teacher should create this by setting an inspiring example on all levels.

I promise to share lived experience, demonstrable excellence, and perpetual encouragement.

9. I believe that the best teacher raises the student’s ability through spiritual vibration.

I promise to create a learning environment that lifts each person up, helping them release old and restrictive patterns and enter a deeper connection with Self and Spirit.

Bonus: What about number 10 in the list? Only you know what it is.

I promise not to dictate your needs and to respect all that is unique about you. Correspondingly, when you are ready, I promise to let you go.
