Astrology-Based Tarot Spread for the June 2026 New Moon
For the tarot practice group yesterday, we did a New Moon tarot spread based on the chart for the Gemini New Moon. The “Escaping the Cradle Tarot Spread” identifies a growth opportunity that is relevant for the month ahead. It also describes what’s protecting but also limiting that opportunity. The spread advises how to escape the confines of those limitations through bypassing challenges with the help of an ally. Ultimately, it reveals the epic adventure that waits for you when you achieve your freedom.
This spread is based on yesterday’s New Moon and is most relevant when performed between now and June 17. Of course, it will always work well as a tarot spread! But right now we get the supporting symbolism of astrology to empower it.
Understanding the New Moon in Gemini

To start, we discussed what the new moon represents. The group participants suggested ideas including: the darkness before the light, liminal space, beginning of new cycle, and hidden things.
We also explored what Gemini represents. Ideas proposed included sociability, kindness, talkative, processes out loud, “outside thoughts,” variety, and ability to split focus.
Then, putting those together, we described the New Moon in Gemini as: “a sociable person stuck inside,” “internally exploring ideas to bring into the light,” and “a new cycle of friendships” among others.
The Cradle Aspect Pattern

Once we had established this basic understanding of the New Moon in Gemini, we examined the chart for the new moon, which features a cradle configuration (more info here or here).
In the June 14, 2026 New Moon, all the planets are within the safety and protection of the cradle. We discussed how the cradle keeps what it holds safe, and that the edge of the cradle (the opposition, in this chart between Venus in Leo and Pluto in Aquarius) is the border that can be crossed to achieve freedom from the constraint imposed by the cradle. Meanwhile, the other half of the chart is the epic adventure of the big wide world. Working from this symbolism, we see that the New Moon is contained in the safety of the cradle. But over the next few days the Moon will escape the cradle, conjoining Venus to oppose Pluto and crossing the border into the epic adventure of freedom.
Escaping the Cradle Tarot Spread
So the spread is as follows:
Card 1. Cradle: What’s keeping you safe and protected, but also holding you back
Card 2. New Moon: Your intention for the month or what you want to accomplish
Card 3, on the left. Border Challenge: What challenges you when you try to cross the border (Pluto in Aquarius)
Card 4, on the right. Border Ally: What will support you crossing the border (Venus in Leo, ally because the moon will join her in about three days, opposing Pluto)
Card 5. The Epic Adventure: What awaits you when you successfully escape the cradle and cross the border.
We laid them out in the following pattern:
……………Card 5…………….
Card 3……………….Card 4
……………Card 2…………….
……………Card 1…………….
Guidelines for Reading the “Escaping The Cradle” Tarot Spread
It’s useful to start reading the spread with Card 2, to establish the Intention and see how it fits in with the rest of the cards.
We also noticed that the primary “action” cards, the cards that guide you in what to do, are Cards 3 and 4.
The spread worked really nicely. I might normally have had each of us select the Intention card intentionally, by going through the deck and choosing a card that represented something that you would want to work on. But letting it fall by random draw worked for 80% of the participants.
Suggestions for Better Understanding a Confusing Spread
People tended to have the most trouble understanding Cards 3 and 4, the border cards. It wasn’t always clear HOW to cross the border (to establish the actions recommended by the border cards). Using the “Who is the Character?” and “What are they Doing?” questions to find the verb in the card helped, following my guidelines in Easily Interpret Tarot Cards with these Five Questions.
The other problem people seemed to have was how to view a difficult card in Card 4, the Ally. Although there can be a temptation to swap cards 3 and 4, I recommend staying patient with your spread and work out how the difficult card is offering something productive to do. Perhaps you can think of it this way: sometimes you don’t necessarily like your ally. That doesn’t mean they can’t help you! Also, sometimes it’s in your best interest to be or do something that’s not typical for you. Perhaps the Gemini new moon is bringing out an alter ego! But maybe in the context of the other cards the card is not as difficult as it seems, and represents a new way of thinking about something.
This spread is particularly timely when done between the New Moon in Gemini on June 14, 2026 and the Moon conjunct Venus on June 17, 2026.
