The Dark Side

Estimated Reading Time: 3 minutes

Welcome to the Tarot Blog Hop!

An international group of tarotists are all writing on the same topic and then linking to each other so that the reader can hop from one blog to the next, seeing all the permutations and facets that the topic inspired in different writers.

Joanne Sprott of Cosmic Whispers Tarot wrangled this hop, proposing “going back to the Dark Side, the Hidden Realm beneath the autumn leaves and the snow.” “Itโ€™s time to dig,” she said.

At the time of today’s blog hop launch, the Sun will be in the first degree of Capricorn and the Moon will be in the first decan of Libra. Following the Golden Dawn tradition of correspondences, Capricorn is associated with the Devil card, an appropriate guide to understanding darkness. But our lunar placement is also very interesting this morning. The first third of Libra is ruled by Saturn and the card is the Three of Swords, titled the Lord of Sorrow.

For a spread to explore the symbolism further, draw three cards to represent each sword.

Sword 1 is Libra, balance. What do you need to balance in your life? What is the dark side of this balance? What is the light that comes from balance?

Sword 2 is Saturn, limitations. Where do you need stronger boundaries in your life? What is the dark side of imposing limitations? What is the light that comes from these boundaries?

Sword 3 is The Rose, potency. What is your potency that is currently destroyed? What is the dark side of this destruction of power? What is the light that comes from tearing down this power?

P.S. As I’m sure some of you noticed, the Three of Swords is associated with the second decan of Libra, not the first as stated in this article. The moon was definitely in the first decan of Libra at publication time (Two of Swords, ruled by the Moon), but nevertheless I chose the card for the second decan. I’m going to blame Mercury retrograde and leave it at that! The spread is still perfectly usable, so enjoy!

  1. Very nice working of the day’s astrological positions into the card associations to create a great pattern for interpretation. I do need to internalize a set of astrological associations…

  2. Oh it is a genius idea to check today’s sun and moon positions and base a spread on it! I will have to try it later on!

  3. Using current positions and decans in spreads or personality analysis is really fun and often creepy how spot on it can be. I just went through Austin Coppock’s decan course and book to deepen my tarot readings…and what people were doing with symbols 500+ years ago and their later impact on the RWS imagery is bonkers. Thank you for sharing a spread based on the current positions and decans…layers upon layers upon… <3
