Eyelet Tarot Bag Knitting Instructions

You can never have too many tarot bags!

Tarot bags are pretty and functional. They keep your cards safe, provide a quick way to identify decks, and are perfectly portable when you need to grab your cards and go.

Ever since I learned to knit two years ago I’ve been looking for the perfect tarot bag pattern—and when I couldn’t find one that was just right for me, I designed it myself!

This is a drawstring pouch that is sized to a snug fit for a standard tarot deck. A garter stitch cuff with eyelets creates a channel that shows off decorative drawstrings. An eyelet row near the bottom not only is a pretty detail but lets you peek at what deck is in the bag. A slight shaping gives the bag a tailored look. Satin ribbon drawstrings adorned with colorful crow beads are a fast finish.

Instructions for a large size are included if you want a looser fit, room for additional items such as a pendulum or crystal, or something to fit your larger decks.

Skill Level: Easy

Finished Size: Approximately 4 1/2” wide by 6 1/2” tall—fits a standard size tarot deck. (Instructions are given in parentheses for a bag for a large deck.)

Gauge: 16 st = 4” in Stockinette.

Materials

• 50g (86 yds) Alchemy Yarns of Transformation, Wabi Sabi, 66% Silk/34% Wool
• 1 1/3 yds 3/16” (5 mm) satin ribbon, cut into two 24” pieces
• 12 crow beads in contrasting colors.

I was able to knit two standard size bags out of every 50 g skein of yarn.

Supplies

• US Size 8 (5.0 mm) DPNs
• Tapestry Needle
• Large-eye needle to thread the ribbon through the beads (if the tapestry needle is too large)

Eyelet Tarot Bag Instructions

Casting On

CO 36 (48) stitches, divide between four DPNs, putting 10 st on 1^st and 3^rd needles, 8 st on 2^nd and 4^th needle (12 st on each needle), and join to knit in the round.

Rows 1, 5: Knit
Row 2, 4, 6: Purl
Row 3: *K2tog, yo; rep from *

Body of the Bag

Rows 7-26 (31)—20 (25) rows: Knit

Eyelet Detail

Row 27 (32): Purl
Row 28 (33): *K2tog, yo; rep from *
Row 29 (34): Purl

Shaping the Bottom of the Bag

Rows 30-34 (35-39)—5 rows: Knit
Row 35 (40): K2T, k 16 (22), K2T, k 16 (22)—34 (46) stitches total
Row 36 (41): Knit
Row 37 (42): K2T, k 15 (21), K2T, k 15 (21)—32 (44) stitches total
Row 38 (43): Knit
Row 39 (44): K2T, k 14 (20), K2T, k 14 (20)—30 (42) stitches total

Finishing

Bind off and cut the yarn leaving an 18” tail.
Using the 18” tail, stitch the bottom together with an overhand stitch.
Weave in ends.

Drawstrings

Thread the first piece of ribbon through the eyelets, starting on the left side and threading it in and out of each eyelet until you’re back where you started.

Then thread the second piece of ribbon starting on the right side going all the way around and back to where you started.

Knot the ribbons close to the edge of the bag while the bag is fully open. Decorate each of the four ends of the ribbons with crow beads, knotting again under the beads.
