Tarot Classes

I teach a unique style of reading that focuses on learning to understand the metaphorical language of the cards through a close analysis of the unique symbols of the deck that is being studied. For my advanced classes, I focus on systems of correspondence, which reveal the underlying structure behind intuition. Please contact me or subscribe to my newsletter if you are interested in learning more about upcoming classes.

I am a member of the American Tarot Association, Tarosophy Tarot Association, and am a Certified Professional Tarot Reader through the Tarot Certification Board of America. In addition to having written my own code of ethics, which has been approved by the Tarot Certification Board of America (TCBA), I follow the American Tarot Association Code of Ethics, and the TCBA Client Bill of Rights.

The Mythology of the Tarot

Story and myth weave threads of the eternal into our daily life. They layer texture and color onto our communication. The magic of tarot touches a deeper part of us when we discover the legends of history in the immediacy and relevancy of the now.

Tarot cards were not designed to represent specific mythological figures, although throughout the ages many interpreters have layered stories of myth over the images.

For example:

bullet

The Marseille Lovers, showing a man and two women, represents the Greek god Hercules in the moment of decision between Pleasure and Virtue, choosing between an easy path that leads to vice or a difficult path that leads to the glories of his destiny.

bullet

The Justice card is sometimes represented as the Egyptian goddess Ma’at, who weighs a person’s heart after death against her feather of truth. If the person’s heart is true, they proceed into the afterlife. If not, they’re thrown to a ferocious beast.

bullet

The Hanged Man is the Norse god Odin, who hung upside down on the World Tree for nine days and nine nights, sacrificing himself unto himself, until he reached into the abyss and pulled out the runes, bringing written language to his people.

Working primarily with the Major Arcana, but also noting myths and legends that can be found in the Minors, we’ll explore the stories generally associated with each card, as well as touching on alternates and deck-specific mythology. Using guided meditations, classical hymns of invocation, and specially designed tarot spreads, we’ll meet the gods and goddesses of the tarot, and find today’s truth in their ancient tales.

What Joy's students are saying about this material when it was first presented as part of a meetup:

"So many 'bits and pieces' came together! I am in awe! Every piece of knowledge adds to the tapestry of tarot."

"Interesting perspective. Joy never ceases to amaze!"

Improve the accuracy and clarity of your readings by learning the skills of professional tarot reading. This is an intimate class of four or six people who already read tarot for family, friends, or clients, but want to improve their skills. We will focus solely on practicing readings with the goal of learning how to pull the most information from the cards. Each session will consist of one or two sample readings performed by me, in which I explain my process. Then participants will do readings for each other and I'll coach and critique. We'll refresh existing skills and learn new skills as the need arises within the context of each reading. We'll also address general readings, how to focus sessions with clearer questions, difficult clients or reading situations, and how to answer extremely specific questions with the cards. Each class participant will receive a half-hour reading from me in the class setting, as well as giving readings to and receiving readings from other class participants.

Prerequisite is confidence reading for friends, family, or clients with your preferred deck.

Court Cards are considered by many tarot readers to be the most difficult cards to read. In this class, we will expand our knowledge of the cards, but then narrow down ways to get the most specific information out of them. Are they people? Aspects of the client? Impersonal forces at play? Clues in the question, spread positions, and surrounding cards help the savvy reader jump straight to the most relevant meaning for these confusing cards. Once that first step is determined, we'll place a slew of interpretive techniques at your beck and call to delineate relationships, compatibility, and courses of action.

In this class we will learn:

bullet

How each rank (Page, Knight, Queen, King) affects the meaning of the cards

bullet

How the Waite-Smith ranks (Page, Knight, Queen, King) differ from the Golden Dawn or Crowley-Harris Thoth ranks (Princess, Prince, Queen, Knight), increasing your ability to read with a variety of decks and giving you fresh insight into your deck of choice

bullet

How to break down the suits (Wands, Cups, Swords, Pentacles, or other symbolism as used by your deck) and the elements (fire, water, air, earth) to discern energies, personality qualities, and professions

bullet

How to integrate the astrological associations of the courts for more detailed delineation of character traits

bullet

Tricks for evaluating what role these characters play, and whether they represent the client on their path or the other characters in the drama

bullet

How to determine the relationships between the people represented by these cards to more clearly assess the degree of compatibility or equality

bullet And more!

How Many: Six students minimum/Eight students maximum for this class.

What is the esoteric tarot? The esoteric tarot developed over the 18th and 19th centuries as a way to integrate a variety of symbolic systems including qabalah and astrology with the spiritual development described in the Fool’s Journey. The esoteric tarot allows us to go deeper into the spiritual symbolism of the cards, but also provides techniques for getting practical everyday information in ways that produce very detailed and specific results.

Practical Qabalah and Intuitive Astrology or familiarity with the basics of qabalah and astrology are highly suggested prerequisites.

In this 6-week class you will learn:

bullet

Basic qabalistic symbolism and how it relates to the tarot (includes the four qabalistic worlds and the ten sephiroth of the Tree of Life)

bullet

Basic astrological symbolism and how it relates to the tarot (this includes the elements, the planets, and the signs)

bullet

how to determine difficulty vs. ease in spreads using the relationships of the four elements

bullet

The esoteric titles of the cards

bullet

How to determine detailed timing using the cards

bullet

How to read the Minor Arcana in decks without illustrations

bullet

How to perform the five operations of the Opening of the Key (what I call the mid-life crisis spread—it seems like you could unfold the rest of your life if you do the whole thing!)

bullet

How to seamlessly integrate esoteric information into your readings without confusing your querent

For this class bring one of your esoteric decks: the Crowley Thoth deck, the Ciceros’ Golden Dawn deck, Wang’s Golden Dawn deck, the Dowson Hermetic Tarot or a Marseille style deck. Other unillustrated decks ok with instructor approval. Check out my blog post, Golden Dawn Cheat-Sheet Tarot Decks for recommendations and cards samples.

What Joy's students are saying about this class:

“Excellent! I found the Minor Arcana information very helpful to better understand the basis for traditional meanings/interpretations.”

“What I liked best was community, focus, challenge. New way of looking at tarot, qabalah, astrology. Provided new sources for meditation…therefore spiritual growth.”

“I loved this. The tests, accountability, depth and symbolism were what I liked best about this course. I feel like my readings will have so much more depth.”
