About Reiki

A spiritual practice

to connect and heal

with universal life force

Reiki means "spiritual energy." Reiki is a spiritual practice that sensitizes you to and helps you to increase and fine tune your connection to the presence and movement of energy. Healing and relaxation are wonderful side effects of this spiritual practice. The energy channeled by the Reiki practitioner is the same energy called variously chi, prana, spirit, or orgone. It has been called by many other names by many different cultures. Reiki differs from other energetic forms of healing in that the practitioner uses symbols and specific meditative techniques to increase their connection to spirit and focus the energy to better facilitate the healing process. The symbols used in traditional Reiki are said to have been received in a moment of spiritual epiphany by the founder of Reiki, Mikao Usui, but research has revealed apparent origins in ancient Buddhism and Shintoism as well as other Japanese philosophical and religious contexts.

Align spirit and body

to allow yourself to heal

a joyful responsibility

What to Expect from a Reiki Treatment

A Reiki treatment can last from a few minutes to an hour or more. Generally, a full treatment will last from 40 to 60 minutes. Reiki can be done as often as you like.

Reiki energy is channeled by the practitioner and naturally drawn in by the client. The Reiki energy will flow to where it is most needed, so that the client is empowered to allow healing to occur. Many clients commonly experience one or more of the following: deep relaxation, a feeling of warmth or coolness, a sensation of tingling or of energy moving, the stimulation and/or release of physical tension or pain or of emotional blockages, or a zoned-out or blissed-out state that fades into feeling physically calm, emotionally content, and spiritually present.

Because Reiki works on the energetic body and is not directly manipulative of the physical body, touching the physical body is not required. However, it is traditional for Reiki practitioners to place their hands directly on the body when it is comfortable and convenient to do so. The Reiki works equally well whether transmitted through the physical body or streamed into the energetic body, but often the client feels more directly connected to the energy when they are aware of the flow of energy and can feel the placement of the practitioner's hands. I generally work partly hands-on and partly in the aura, but I can easily adjust my techniques to fit the client's preference. To allow for the easy flow of the Reiki energy, it is advisable for the client to dress in loose, comfortable clothing.

Although Reiki is energy that comes from a source I consider to be spiritual in nature, it is not a religion and you do not need to have any particular religious or spiritual beliefs to benefit from it.

Distant Healing

Enkaku chiryô ho sessions (sessions of connecting through oneness, or more commonly called distant or remote healing) are also available. When the practitioner connects to that place of unity poetically referred to as "the place without place and the time without time," she can influence that which appears to be distant in time or space. Treatments done from this place of unity can be received by the client with efficacy equal to an in-person treatment.

The Role of Responsibility in Reiki

Because of the power of Reiki, most practitioners follow a strict code of ethics that does not allow for energy work to be done on a person without his or her permission. Therefore, enkaku chiryô ho sessions can only be scheduled by the client for him or herself, not for another. If you are concerned for another person, you can receive the Reiki yourself with the intention that you will become better able to help the person you care about in a way that is mutually beneficial for all involved. It is imperative to understand that all of us must heal in our own way and in our own time. The path others choose is right for them, and it is not helpful to them for us to judge the choices they make. Part of our spiritual development lies in recognizing the value of honoring that which is different from us. The best healing you can provide for another person or for the planet as a whole is to take on the joyful responsibility of your own personal healing and spiritual growth so that you may inspire others to follow your example.

Reiki Classes and Initiations (Attunements)

Connect with Source

practice Spirit

grow and heal

I offer classes in energy work and Reiki. I also perform Reiki initiations (sometimes called attunements), which help a person increase their natural connection to the Reiki energy for spiritual growth and to heal themselves and others. It is not necessary to be attuned to Reiki to do energy healing. And I have observed that people who are sincere and committed to their energetic healing practice will automatically form and deepen the connection to Source from which this healing energy comes. However, to practice the system of energy healing that was developed by Mikao Usui and which is called Reiki, it is necessary to receive the initiations from someone who has been initiated into the third or Teacher level of Reiki. I have received the initiations for the Teacher level of Reiki in two different lineages, and so can teach the system in either of the styles I was taught. However, I find that the spiritual growth emphasis of the Usui Reiki Ryôhô tradition through the International House of Reiki is more aligned with my own spiritual practice and all the classes I currently offer are in this lineage.

Reiki Reading List

These are some of the many amazing books on Reiki that I recommend to my students and those who would like to learn more about this spiritual practice and healing modality.

Brennan, Barbara Ann. Hands of Light: A Guide to Healing Through the Human Energy Field. New York: Bantam Books, 1988.

Although Barbara Ann Brennan teaches her own style of energy work (not Reiki), this book is excellent for learning about energy healing in general. I found it particularly useful for learning about the aura and energetic bodies.

---. Light Emerging: The Journey of Personal Healing. New York: Bantam Books, 1993.

Barbara Ann Brennan’s sequel to Hands of Light. I found the information on the three types of auric field interactions to be very helpful; also, her exercise for Hara alignment is simple and very powerful.

Chia, Mantak. Awaken Healing Energy through the Tao. Santa Fe: Aurora P., 1983.

His techniques for energy activation and circulation are highly effective, his writing extremely accessible, and his exercises easy to follow. His Microcosmic orbit is necessary knowledge for Reiki Masters and Master/Teachers in some Reiki lineages, although anyone can do the M-C Orbit and benefit from the increase of chi for self-healing.

Petter, Frank Arjava, tr. Christine M. Grimm. Reiki: The Legacy of Dr. Usui. Twin Lakes, WI: Lotus Light Shangi-La, 1999.

---. The Original Reiki Handbook of Dr. Mikao Usui. Twin Lakes, WI: Lotus Light Shangi-La, 2003.

Rand, William Lee. Reiki The Healing Touch: First and Second Degree Manual. Southfield, MI: Vision Publications, 1998.

Stein, Diane. Essential Reiki: A Complete Guide to an Ancient Healing Art. Berkeley: Crossing P., 1995.

I have several of Diane Stein’s books and am always impressed with her unrelenting dedication to making healing techniques universally available. I first learned about Reiki from her book All Women are Healers. Essential Reiki is an excellent handbook that covers all levels of Reiki practice, including information on both traditional and non-traditional techniques.

Stiene, Bronwen and Frans. The Japanese Art of Reiki. New York: O Books, 2005.

---. The Reiki Sourcebook. New York: O Books, 2003.

Although last alphabetically, this book may very well be my first choice for excellent, no-nonsense information on the history and practice of Reiki. The Reiki Sourcebook gives a clear and historical account of the development of Mikao Usui's system of Reiki and through extensive research carefully delineates the traditional practices from the non-traditional, placing Usui Reiki in a historical and cultural context. The exercises are simple and effective, and the emphasis on the spiritual practice of Reiki is inspiring. The Stienes, in an informational and non-judgmental way, lay out details on all the various lineages of Reiki to allow students to knowledgably select the tradition that they would like to work in.
