Tarot and Finance: Unlock Your Money Magic

My Money Magic tarot spread, using three decks and exploring Jupiter in Leo in my second house, aspected to my Sun and Neptune. The Empyrean Key process can be simple or add lots of layers and complexity, but either way it always goes deep!

I am impassioned by the idea of expressing myself creatively and uniquely and encouraging others to do so as well. My blog name, Completely Joyous, comes from the sixteenth chapter of Deuteronomy in the Hebrew Bible. The verse, transliterated from the Hebrew, is, β€œVesamachta bechagecha, vehayita ach same’ach,” meaning, β€œAnd you will rejoice in your festivals, and you will be completely joyous.” The word β€œach” in the phrase is translated as β€œcompletely” but really means β€œonly”–you will be only joyous, or nothing but joyous. A tall order, but it’s my name, and something to strive toward. Not only do I use these words for my blog name and as a touchstone for my personal development, but this concept forms the foundation and mission of my business–to help and guide you as you move forward in your journey to becoming completely you.

My work is spiritual in nature, but in order to be effective, all spiritual work must be grounded in the mundane, the practical, the real world. A world of the tarot Pentacles–commitment, stability, security, dedication, discipline, and yes, money.

Money can be difficult for a lot of spiritual people, myself included. Whether due to vows of poverty from this life or a previous life, or lack of proper role models of abundance and generosity, or simply the difficult and often unsupported path of moving away from enmeshment with the masses and taking on the laborious work of carving out–or perhaps dynamiting!– your path through the obstacles and guards that block any exit from the fenced enclosure that dictates groupthink and a limited understanding of who you are. An understanding that fails to take into consideration your innate truth as manifested from and connected with, indeed one with, the Divine.

In qabalah, we learn that the top of the Tree of Life is associated with the Divine, Perfect Unity, singleness of Truth. The bottom of the Tree is perfect diversity, individuality, unique expression. The paths on the Tree remind us that each manifested and incomparable expression, no matter how different from any other expression, can always be traced back to the undifferentiated.

For me, I strive to know the undifferentiated through meditation, Reiki, and ritual. I search for my own unique expression in tarot and astrology. By combining my search for self through tarot and astrology and my striving for Divine Unity in meditation and ritual, I place my individual expression in alignment with the truth of Spirit.

I have developed a system that breaks this philosophy down into a step-by-step, structured process that I call the Empyrean Key (I introduce the system with an exercise called Unlock Your Personal Symbol with the Empyrean Key). Using tarot and astrology, ritual and contemplation, the system provides a straightforward method to move between the worlds of Perfect Diversity and Divine Unity, allowing you to become completely you, a perfectly individual expression of the Divine. My primary class that uses this process is my popular Journey to the Ultimate Boon. But there are an infinite variety of ways to engage this system. It can be used with all aspects of yourself and all areas of life.

And that includes money.

There is no cookie-cutter approach to anything in life, including prosperity and abundance. So I ask one simple question–what does your natal chart say about your unique and innate approach to money and resources? By understanding how you personally view, value, and invent your own wealth, you can open up to the patterns that produce a consistent flow of life’s necessary resources.

The starting place for such a process is the second house of the astrology chart. Ready to give it a try? Grab a copy of your natal chart or pull it up online using a service like Astro.com or Astrolabe. On Astro.com, follow the link under “CHARTS & DATA, Extended Chart Selection” on the right (I prefer Astro.com and select whole signs for the House System). On Astrolabe, click on “My Free Birth Chart.” There is no registration or email address required for either site.

To get your chart, you will need to know the date, time and place of your birth–a correct time is essential to knowing the houses on the chart, although if you need a workaround, we can explore the chart in other ways (if you can’t identify your second house, you can try looking at what you have in the sign of Taurus, or working with Venus in your chart). The correct birth time can be obtained from a hospital issued birth certificate, or from a parent or close relative.

Once you have your chart, take a look at what sign is on the cusp of the second house–if you prefer to use whole sign houses as I do, then the second house is the next sign counterclockwise on the chart, or in zodiacal order, from the sign of your ascendant. I was born with Cancer rising, so my second house is Leo, the sign that follows Cancer in the order of the zodiac.

Take a look at the second house and see if there are any planets there. Again, it’s easiest (and, luckily, most effective) to use whole sign houses, so all you have to do is observe if there are any planets in the sign of your second house. If not, no worries, for now you can focus on the sign (for those more knowledgeable about astrology, you can take into consideration the planetary ruler of the sign of your second house–if you’re not sure, stick to the sign of your second).

Now, you know what Planet(s) and Sign are in the second house. The next step is to translate them into tarot cards!

I have put together a basic handout that covers the Money Magic process. It walks you through the discovery of the tarot cards that are related to your second house, and then guides you in transforming this knowledge into a magical symbol that can be used in meditation, ritual, spellwork, or just plain old fun. Try decorating cookies with your symbol! Then gobble them up for yummy transformational magic! You can also use hard-boiled eggs dyed and decorated with your symbol–Easter is coming up, don’t you know!

  1. ‘… all spiritual work must be grounded in the mundane, the practical, the real world.’

Very few actually understand this concept and even fewer seem to work with it. So glad that there is someone else out there that has this ethos towards both the spiritual and the tarot πŸ™‚

So happy that I am not the only practical tarotist in the village πŸ˜€

    • Hi Deb! (Notice I got all this done after saying yesterday it was impossible! πŸ™‚ )

No, nothing to worry about if there aren’t any planets in your 2nd house. It can mean there’s no particular strength there, but also no particular weakness. If I were working with you individually or in the Money Magic workshop, I’d have you look at the planetary ruler of the second house. But even without that, you can just pull the cards for the sign of the second as well as the 2nd House card itself (the Hierophant), as indicated in the handout, and work from there. It’s still what makes you unique!

      • Debbie, I looked at your chart on Facebook and if you use whole sign houses, which I recommend, you have Jupiter in the 2nd, so you might want to work with that. Jupiter in Aquarius in the second–Wheel of Fortune (planet), Star (sign), Hierophant (house). Have fun!

  2. Thanks for the astro homework Joy. I’ve just thrown down some cards and will leave them to sit a while before I start with the art homework… πŸ™‚

  3. I love the way you stretch between Divine Unity and Perfect Diversity! And that Money Magic course sounds amazing. The astrology kind of goes over my head right now, but the concept sounds excellent. Thanks for sharing these thoughts and ideas πŸ™‚

    • Thank you, Chloe! The astrology isn’t as bad as it sounds. If you send me your birth data for your chart, I can quickly pull it and let you know what you have in the 2nd house. πŸ™‚

  4. Joy…. what a Joy you are…. a wealth of fabulous information.. and this does work… I made a magical symbol last year with the help of Tarot & Astrology… and it worked!! Money was the next thing on my list, so I will certainly be following your advice.

    • That’s awesome! I’d be curious to know more about your process. I like combining the natal chart into the process, instead of or in addition to an electional-type work, because it can help us see into ourselves better and understand our relationship to money. I was quite surprised by what I got working with my chart, and at the same time felt a “that makes so much sense” feeling. It helped me with restructuring my business even. It also helped me understand why I have some of the money habits I have, and let me take those habits and reframe them into positive ways of working with money. πŸ™‚
